What is Office 365 tenant?

Let’s take an example to understand tenant. Apartment complex has approx. 400 apartments. So Apartment is tenant for you. Apartment complex is Office 365 data center / Cloud.

When you are registering the organization with office 365. By default a tenant is created for organization. And two different DNS entries is registered in DNS. The two DNS entries that will be created are the following.

· Organization name/tenant name .onmicrosoft.com

· Organization name/tenant name.sharepoint.com

Tenant is the container for items of your Organization such as users, domains, subscriptions etc. . There is no cost to having a Tenant itself. Cost comes in picture when you have purchase subscriptions plan for your organization.

‘Tenant provide an identity for organization in office 365 data center. Its create an default domain with name ‘tenant name.ormicrosoft.com’. you can also registered new domain with office 365 for your organization’

Tenant is managed by using free version of Azure Active Directory that comes with Office 365 Subscription. To manage the Tenant, There are different type of role which is built in Azure Active Directory like Global Administrator, Global Reader, SharePoint Administrator, Helpdesk Administrator etc.

Global Administrator is the Owner of the Tenant. Mostly tenant name is organization name. Large organizations also have multiple tenant. Each tenant has unique boundaries like data can not be transferred from one tenant to another tenant.

To manage the tenant, Admin Center is used. it has very user friendly or easy to learn and manage. it has Microsoft Purview portal that is used to manage the audit of tenant. Tenant also provide set of applications like MS Team, SharePoint, Exchange, Yammer etc. as per user subscriptions.

Now Microsoft has already launched the Upgraded Version of Office 365 that is Microsoft 365. Subscriptions plan are also changed. To get the details of Subscriptions plan, please browse the official Microsoft site.
