Navigation in SharePoint Online
Proper Navigation attracts more users. Main purpose of
Navigation is ‘Navigate Links here to there in quick manner’. This makes your
application user friendly. Therefore, Microsoft introduced few new navigations
like Hub navigation.
The type of navigation in SharePoint Online are followings-
1- Hub Navigation
2- Site Collection Navigation (Global Navigation) (Top Navigation)
3- Site Navigation (Local Navigation) (Quick Launch)
4- Megamenu Navigation
5- People Navigation
Above given navigations are used in different sites and
features.
Like Hub Navigation is used in Hub Site.
Site Navigation-
Team Site has navigation on two position which are Quick
Launch (on left) and Top Navigation (on Top). Communication site has only Quick
launch on top which is on left in Team site.

Site Collection Navigation (Global Navigation)
If organization wants to have common navigation for all
employee to all subsite. In this case global navigation is best option for this
requirement. It was common in SharePoint 2010/13/16/19 but in SharePoint Online,
this is only available with sites which are not connected to Office 365 groups
like Classic team Site and modern team site without an office 365 group.
Hub Navigation-
If organization has multiple independent
site collections. Those Independent site
collections have own independent navigation. Organization wants to bring them under one umbrella.
Common Navigation is not possible through Global Navigation in this scenario. To
overcome this issue, Microsoft introduced Hub Site. This site has a unique
navigation which is called hub navigation. Site collection Navigation
limitation ‘It is not supported to those sites which are connected with office
365 groups’ is also countered in Hub Navigation.
Megamenu Navigation-
Traditional dropdown is not auto adjustable so when we use traditional dropdown navigation, some text or some item is hidden or in shadow. So user is not able to see and read items. In this dropdown approach, we cannot have multi levels of nested items. To overcome this issue, Mega Menu Navigation is introduced.
Personal Navigation-
It is not an option for manually configuration. It is used
by SharePoint online for internal navigation in limit feature. These navigation
items will vary from person to person because it depends on the specific user’s
site visits.
