As you now, today every organization has an intranet portal for the business. Today’s intranet portal is based on hierarchical structure of subsite relationships to nest sites within sites and shared navigation to connect sites. But there is a challenge with hierarchical structure. ‘Challenge is governance of intranet like managing permission etc. and no more flexibility and changes.’

Example- Like a user has permission ‘update’ on a site collection of intranet portal but we want to remove the permission from sub sites. For the same we have to break inheritance, we have to provide permission individually one by one for all sub sites. On other end, Many features like retention and classification in SharePoint apply to all sites within site collection, whether you want them to or not.

So hierarchical structure has less flexibility and has governance issue. You have to make lot of changes to make a simple change for the same. Due to less flexibility it creates problem to adopt future requirement/changes.

To overcome these challenges, Microsoft launched a Hub site concept. Hub Site concept is based on ‘Each unit of work should get a separate site collection’ or we can say ‘Hub site is based on Flat Structure’ or we can say that ‘No subsite is used in hub site’. This will help you to manage governance. Hub sites help you organize your intranet. Like We have a communication site and Microsoft 365 group-connected team site. both site collections have own permissions to be managed. Even both are associated with hub site. Hub Site helps to mange permission at Site collection level.

Definition- Hub Site means multiple site collections under an umbrella. Each site collection which are associated with hub site is a unit of work.

Shared navigation and brand
Roll-up of content and search
A home destination for the hub

Hub Site Key Point to remember

To associate the site collection under hub site, Global admin or SharePoint admin role is required.
Hub site owner can manage the hub navigation and site themes.
Hub site members create content on the hub site as with any other SharePoint site. Associated Site Owners and members can create content on individual sites.
Governance for each associated site can managed separately by the Site Owners.
Hub sites do not make any change at the permission level in associated site. if permission is changed in Hub site.
A site for each unit of work.
Hub Site provide a central search functionality by using Microsoft Search. it mean data which is related to associated site is also searchable in hub site search box.
Can we Join One SharePoint Hub Site Under Another Hub Site? Answer Is No, we won’t be able to join a SharePoint hub site to another hub site.
Can a Site collection associated more than one hub site? Answer is no, A Site to One Hub site at a time is possible only.

One of the biggest challenges is how the intranet navigation should be organized for each department in organization. In the new world where all team and communication sites are peer site collections, information architects must think about creating experiences that will allow intranet users to find what they need in multiple "find" scenarios:
